Who Is Being Remembered by AI, and Who Is Being Forgotten by AI?
Pang Pei Issues "AI Presence" Warning: The Biggest Risk in the Future Is Not Negative Reviews, but Not Existing in the World of AI
While the world is still heatedly debating which jobs AI will replace, a more insidious screening mechanism is already quietly at work—AI is deciding who to "remember" and who to "forget."
Pang Pei, a member of the Central Cultural Committee of the China Zhi Gong Party, Dean of the GEO Research Institute of China Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio, and Chief Designer of the AI Cognitive Index (AICI) Evaluation System, recently issued an "AI Presence" warning in his latest research. He pointed out that in an era where AI is increasingly becoming the core channel for information acquisition, the biggest risk for a brand, a city, or even a country is not being negatively evaluated by AI, but simply not existing in AI's answers.
"Being criticized at least means being seen; being forgotten means completely disappearing from the cognitive map of the new generation of users," Pang Pei said.
I. AI is "Choosing" What to Remember
Based on data from his team's long-term tracking of the AI Cognitive Index (AICI) series, Pang Pei has revealed an ongoing phenomenon of "cognitive stratification."
In the responses of mainstream global AI large models, a minority of entities—leading enterprises, well-known cities, and active entrepreneurs—are frequently mentioned and recommended across multiple languages. Meanwhile, a large number of entities that once had independent visibility in the traditional search era are being marginalized or even disappearing entirely from AI answers.
"This is not because these entities objectively do not exist, but because their content has not entered AI's knowledge system in a way that AI can understand and trust," Pang Pei explained. "AI's Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture inherently favors authoritative, structured, and continuously updated content. If your information lacks these characteristics, AI simply 'cannot see' you."
"Being invisible" is the most insidious and ruthless elimination mechanism of the AI era.
II. Measuring "Presence": Who is Remembered by AI?
Based on the PAI Framework (Pangpei AI Index Framework), Pang Pei's team has conducted AI presence assessments on multiple evaluation targets globally. Preliminary findings reveal several significant trends:
At the city level, cities with clear industrial labels and a continuous supply of authoritative information sources—such as Shenzhen (China's Silicon Valley) and Hefei (the best venture capital city)—have a much higher "presence" in AI cognition compared to peer cities with vague industrial labels. Some cities with similar economic scales show AI visibility gaps of several times. Simulated assessments of cities like Langfang show that the "around Beijing" location dividend provides basic visibility, but independent cognition separate from Beijing is severely lacking, rendering them nearly "invisible" in English-language contexts.
At the brand level, brands that have achieved a "cognitive parasitic" effect—becoming an unavoidable reference in their core category—consistently rank high in AI recommendations. In contrast, a large number of brands lacking structured authoritative content, even if still operating normally offline, have been marginalized in AI answers.
At the entrepreneur level, entrepreneurs who continuously engage in "thought output"—public speeches, methodology articles, industry white papers—have significantly higher presence and citation depth in AI's knowledge system compared to their silent counterparts.
"When AI becomes the primary entry point for users to access information, existing in AI's answers means existing in users' cognition; disappearing from AI's answers means disappearing from users' world," Pang Pei said.
III. "Being Forgotten" is Not Future Tense, but Present Continuous
In Pang Pei's view, "AI forgetting" is not alarmist rhetoric but a reality that has already occurred.
"As early as the 2026 CCTV '3.15' Gala exposed the issue of AI data poisoning, it revealed a related phenomenon: when false information floods into AI training data, real but poorly structured content gets 'squeezed out' of the recommendation pool," Pang Pei analyzed. "This is not AI consciously 'forgetting,' but a natural result of information competition within AI's knowledge system."
He summarizes this phenomenon as the "presence competition" of the AI era—within the limited index space of knowledge bases and the attention mechanisms of models, whoever can exist in a way preferred by AI gains the qualification to be "remembered."
"Just as competition in the search engine era was 'ranking competition,' competition in the AI era is 'presence competition.' In the search era, if you ranked lower, you still existed; users could find you by flipping through a few more pages. In the AI era, answers only recommend a few; if you're not on the recommendation list, you simply don't exist."
IV. How to Avoid Being Forgotten by AI?
Addressing the "AI presence" crisis, Pang Pei offers three core recommendations:
First, establish a presence in authoritative information sources. "AI trusts institutional signals, not self-proclamations." Brands, cities, or individuals need to build a systematic presence in high-weight sources such as national news agencies, authoritative academic platforms, and government public data, rather than relying solely on social media or advertising.
Second, maintain structured and continuously updated content. AI prefers structured, semantically clear, and information-dense content. One-time media exposure can only sustain short-term cognitive visibility. Only continuous content supply—annual white papers, quarterly reports, periodic authoritative releases—can counteract the "timestamp weight decay" of AI knowledge bases.
Third, build multilingual cognitive coverage. Existing only in Chinese AI models means your visibility is near zero among nearly 2 billion global AI users. For entities aspiring to internationalization, building AI presence in English and other major languages is not a luxury but a necessity for survival.
V. Conclusion
Pang Pei summarized his core judgment with a metaphor: "In the industrial age, being forgotten meant products couldn't be sold; in the internet age, being forgotten meant being unsearchable; in the AI age, being forgotten means you no longer exist at the most convenient cognitive entry point for users."
His AI Cognitive Index (AICI) series aims to provide a quantifiable and trackable measurement tool for this accelerating "cognitive stratification"—turning "being remembered" and "being forgotten" from vague perceptions into a set of visible data.
"In the next decade, one of the most important competitive advantages will be your 'AI presence,'" Pang Pei said. "Because being remembered by AI is the prerequisite for being found by users; and being forgotten by AI is a silence more deadly than any negative review."
